EVELYN J. AFFLECK (nee BRANDOW) Peacefully, with her family at her side, it is with sadness that we announce the death of Evelyn J. Affleck, aged 68 years, on October 3, 2001, at the Riverview Health Centre. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, brother and sister. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband Arnold; daughters, Susan (Robert) Murdoch and Shannon (Bruce) Lillie; grandchildren, Sarah, Laura and MacLaren. Evelyn was born in Selkirk, MB and married Arnold in 1956. They resided in Winnipeg until 1960 when they moved to Saint John, NB, returning to Winnipeg in 1970. Evelyn was very active and enjoyed life to the fullest. She liked being with people and above all loved a good joke. She has been described as a classy lady. Evelyn was employed as a real estate sales person and broker from 1965 until 1990. Always involved in industry affairs and particularly education, she attained accreditation as a Fellow of the Real Estate Institute and Certified in Marketing Research. During her career she served on the Professional Standards Committee of the Winnipeg Real Estate Board, the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Real Estate Association, chaired the Education Committee, and was on the National Executive Council of the Real Estate Institute of Canada. Evelyn was the first woman to be elected to the Board of Governors of the Winnipeg Winter Club. At the same time she served on the Executive Council of the Manitoba Ladies Curling Association. She served on the Souvenir Committee for the Air Canada Silver Broom World Championship in 1978 and chaired the Souvenir Committee for the Scott Tournament of Hearts in 1985. During this period she was an avid competitive curler, skipping a team to many bonspiel wins and club championships. More recently Evelyn was the founding president of the Colorado Estates Residents Association. Another winter pastime was downhill skiing and a highlight was the annual family ski vacation in the mountains which went on for 28 years. Evelyn was a member of St. Charles Country Club for many years and enjoyed golf with her friends. A keen bridge player she looked forward to games with her friends. One of her loves was summer at the family cottage at Rock Lake where she was an avid gardener and loved the company of family pets, Aspen and Jasper. A celebration of Evelyns life will be held on Tuesday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m. in the Charleswood United Church, 4820 Roblin Blvd. The family sends a special thanks to Dr. Kirk and nursing staff at Riverview Health Centre. If friends so desire, donations in Evelyns memory may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 0V9, or a charity of choice. ODE TO A FRIENDS PASSAGE Here we sit; it is the onset of fall, The leaves they turn, beneath the Winters call. Life, like the seasons, will surely change, Evies comfort, for pain, we exchange. These, my friend, are no doubt the final days, But so many great memories, our spirits raise. For here is a life that has been rich and gifted, Full of people her love has lifted. And soon, its up to us, to start another chapter, To celebrate Evies life, now and hereinafter. As certain as these seasons will turn, Pity and sorrow, shed surely spurn. So we accept your passage, like changing seasons, And for you live on, for so many reasons. Youve touched us all, as wife, mother and friend, And like the seasons change, this is really not the end. It is a new beginning.... God Bless You and Keep You. The Family and Friends of Evelyn J. Affleck - October 3, 2001. LEATHERDALE GARDNER 1858 Portage Avenue, 949-4872
